The Beacon on the Lonesome Crag

The night leans heavy — a breath withheld,A silent monologue with sea below. Its light, a trembling hymn to none,No hand to greet — no voice to echo.

Yet steadfast, it cleaves the endless shade —A vigil kept, though none repay.

The form’s pattern

Haiku pattern: three lines of five, seven and five syllables.

A real Poemify haiku

Beacon’s Solitude

Staring through the mist, its beam whispers to the void—endless waves reply.

Sonnet

Sonnet pattern: 14 lines in three quatrains and a couplet, rhyming ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.

Beacon in the Vast Silence

Alone it stands where seas in fury meet,Its lantern whispers to the restless foam.A steadfast guardian where the skies retreat,Its hardened walls, the mariner’s lone home.

The winds, confessions of the ocean vast,Embrace its form with melancholic cry.The stars bear witness to each shadow cast,As ages drift beneath an ageless sky.

No voice within, save echoes of the deep,Which cradle cold foundations in their song.A keeper’s watch, his memories to keep,Through endless nights, both lonesome and yet strong.

For in its heart, where solitude may reign,The world’s relentless pulse is not in vain.

Read a classic: Keats, “Bright star” (1819)

Bright star

Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art— Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night And watching, with eternal lids apart, Like nature’s patient, sleepless Eremite, The moving waters at their priestlike task Of pure ablution round earth’s human shores, Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask Of snow upon the mountains and the moors— No—yet still stedfast, still unchangeable, Pillow’d upon my fair love’s ripening breast, To feel for ever its soft fall and swell, Awake for ever in a sweet unrest, Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath, And so live ever—or else swoon to death.

Limerick

Limerick pattern: five lines rhyming AABBA; lines three and four are indented and shorter.

Beacon's Whimsy

On a cliff where the sea sings a tune,A lighthouse hums to the waning moon."Though alone, I still gleam,In each sailor’s dream,A beacon that banishes gloom."

Villanelle

Villanelle pattern: 19 lines in five tercets and a quatrain. Two refrains, A1 and A2, return in turn and close the poem together.

The Beacon’s Silent Vigil

In solitude, the beacon casts its light,Its heart a flame against the endless sea,A steadfast soul immersed in boundless night.

Waves whisper songs of longing, dim and slight,Yet none return with comfort, none break free.In solitude, the beacon casts its light.

The wind's lament gives shadows fleeting flight,A howl of grief, a sailor’s elegy,A steadfast soul immersed in boundless night.

Each pulse, a promise to the lost in sight,A prayer to guide them back to unity. In solitude, the beacon casts its light.

Forgotten cliffs, with storms a ceaseless fight,Their echoes merge with time's infinity.A steadfast soul immersed in boundless night.

Untouched, unseen, it guards with burning might,The shore’s lone watchman crowned with mystery. In solitude, the beacon casts its light,A steadfast soul immersed in boundless night.

Acrostic

Acrostic pattern: the first letters of the lines, read downwards, spell a word.

Beacon’s Lament

Looming high, it watches the sea’s deep sighs,In shadows unseen, whispers coat the skies.Glows steady, though no one gazes near—Herald of storms, yet none to cheer. The winds howl by, companions fleeting,Every hour a heartbeat, endlessly repeating.

Ghazal

Ghazal pattern: five couplets rhyming AA BA CA DA EA. The same refrain closes both lines of the first couplet and the second line of every couplet after it.

Beacon's Lament

Endless waves whisper, yet none reply,The stars above watch in a silent sky.

Stone and storm speak my eternal name,But how I long for one to claim.

Eyes I once knew have drifted away,Leaving my light to guard the spray.

Lonely nights burn like the flame inside,A beacon's heart with no place to hide.

The sea devours all it dares embrace,Yet spares my tower, a woeful grace.

Oh, weary winds that weave through me,Why can't they carry solace from the sea?

Forsaken keeper, my soul’s anchored cry,A lighthouse bound 'til I too fade, and die.

  • A small girl stands in a lamplit city street at night as glowing fireflies drift overhead. Overlaid poem: 'Chasing fireflies in this city of dreams, / Illusions of control splinter at the seams. / We clutch at shadows, dancing on a wire, / But fate's grip tightens, mocking our desires. / Fingers reaching for heaven, but grasping the ground, / Life's grand puppet show, but who pulls the strings, I found. / In this chaos, we stumble, we try to pretend, / But control is elusive, just smoke in the wind.'.

In 1843 Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron’s daughter, wrote that a calculating engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves. She also wrote that it has no pretensions whatever to originate anything.
